Generalized quasilinear approximations in homogeneous shear turbulence

چکیده

A generalized quasilinear (GQL) approximation is applied to homogeneous shear turbulence following previous work on the (QL) model. For GQL approximation, velocity fluctuations are decomposed into low- and high-wavenumber groups, former of which solved by considering full nonlinear equations whereas latter obtained from linearized around former.

Derivative moments in stationary homogeneous shear turbulence

A statistically stationary and nearly homogeneous turbulent shear flow is established by an additional volume forcing in combination with stress-free boundary conditions in the shear direction. Both turbulent energy and enstrophy are stationary to a much better approximation than in previous simulations that use remeshing. The temporal fluctuations decrease with increasing Reynolds number. Ener...

Pumping velocity in homogeneous helical turbulence with shear.

Using different analytical methods (the quasilinear approach, the path-integral technique, and the tau-relaxation approximation) we develop a comprehensive mean-field theory for a pumping effect of the mean magnetic field in homogeneous nonrotating helical turbulence with imposed large-scale shear. The effective pumping velocity is proportional to the product of α effect and large-scale vortici...

Numerical experiments on strongly stratified homogeneous shear turbulence

Turbulence in strongly stable density stratification is a common phenomenon in atmosphere and in oceans and other large water bodies. Stably and strongly stratified turbulence have been studied in many experimental and numerical studies. A characteristic feature of strongly stratified turbulence observed in several studies is the formation of quasi-horizontal layers. During the last decade, the...

3D Homogeneous Turbulence

In this chapter we focus on what can be called the purest turbulence problem, as well as the classical one. It is in fact so pure that, strictly speaking, it cannot exist in nature, although experience shows that natural turbulence often has behavior remarkably close to the pure form. This is the case where rotational and gravitational forces are negligible (i.e., g = f = 0); b or c can be cons...

2D Homogeneous Turbulence

2D homogeneous turbulence is relevant to geophysical turbulence on large horizontal scales because of the thinness of Earth’s atmosphere and ocean (i.e., H/L 1) and Earth’s rotation (i.e., Ro 1) and stable stratification (i.e., Fr 1), both of which tend to suppress vertical flow and make the 2D horizontal velocity component dominant. A detailed explanation for this involves the theory for geost...
